これが昔の低速なCPUであれば、起動に1分以上かかったとしても文句は出なかっただろう。
だが時代は変わったのだ。いや、そもそもCPUが低速でも起動が速いマシンなど、昔からいくらでも存在していた。
今から24年以上前に発売された任天堂のファミリーコンピュータの起動時間は遅かったか？
いいや、電源をONにした瞬間ゲームが立ち上がっただろう。
誰も、電源をONにしてから待ち時間があるなど考えてもいなかった。ファミコンが発売されるもっと前、モバイル型でマルチスクリーンのゲーム機であるゲーム＆ウォッチでさえ、起動は一瞬だった。


ところが、据え置き型ゲーム機のプラットフォームが任天堂のスーパーファミコンからソニーのプレイステーションに変わるな否や、急に待ち時間が発生した。
電源をONにしてもゲームがすぐに始まらない。ロード時間は長い。ファミコンの快適さに慣れ、それが当たり前だと思っていた人たちは、辟易したことだろう。当然ゲーム離れも起きた。
「CPUが進化して、本当にゲームは良くなったのか？」一部のゲームファンは憤慨した。
ライトユーザーは離れた。それでもスーパーファミコンからプレイステーションへの移行という、総合的なグラフィックス性能の向上により、違うファンも獲得し、見かけ上はゲームユーザーが増えているように見えていた。大きな問題点に気付くこともなく、ゆっくりとこの業界は腐り始めていったのだ。
